Welcome back to the second half of our interview with Jennifer Scribner, author of From Mac & Cheese to Veggies, Please: How to get your kid to eat new foods, end picky eating forever, and stay sane in the process! In the first half, we discussed Jennifer's own challenges as a picky adult and her top 3 strategies for getting kids eating.

In today's episode, I put her on the spot on how to use those strategies to get real food into some of the pickiest eaters I've known; including a boy who defiantly tried to starve himself instead of eating dinner, and another whose diet is little more than white bread, Cheerios, peanut butter and white rice with nothing on it.

Improving your diet can be a challenge, but changing the diet of your picky eater can be torture…. until you hear today’s guest. Jennifer Scribner has been working with families affected by autism spectrum disorders. And in case you didn’t know, children on the spectrum (and many adults) are the fussiest eaters around. In her new book, From Mac & Cheese to Veggies, Please: How to get your kid to eat new foods, end picky eating forever, and stay sane in the process! she teaches parents how to navigate the turbulent waters of implementing a nutritious diet for children who refuse to eat anything but white flour and sugar. In this episode, she tells us why children get picky in the first place and her 3 top strategies that parents can use to turn that around.

Day 29 - How Should I Feed My Kids?

One of the biggest myths going around is that children prefer different foods from adults. This belief has gotten us into hot water with allergies and autism rapidly rising across the industrialized world. Go to any La Leche League or Holistic Moms meeting and you’ll witness many patterns across children who suffer from such afflictions. What you are eating during the Challenge is in fact perfect for feeding your children as well. Don’t be surprised if you find their overall health, immunity and behavior to change for the better while eating along with you. Check out details in the video.

If your kids started out like most kids in the West, they have a penchant for sweet not-foods. Don’t dispair! Kids are often much easier than adults to switch over to a new way of eating — especially if they know it’s good for them. Here’s what you do:

1. Get them in the kitchen. Kids love science and to see how things are made. Have them chop, slice and mix according to age and capability. This will pay off when they are older and need to fend for themselves.

2. Stop focusing on reducing fat and calories. Kids need nutrients to grow and maintain their mental and physical health. Cook for flavor and nutrition first. The rest comes naturally.

3. Make real food fun. Just because you’re serving leg of lamb doesn’t mean that dinner can’t be more fun than a pizza (which coincidentally could be made healthy very easily). Here’s an idea. Have an Arabian nights party and serve sides of hummus, cucumber salad and pita bread. Then watch a cool kids movie like Aladdin. Believe me. It works!

Day 13 - Managing the Not-So-Silent Killer

Today’s video was inspired by a Challenge participant’s question. I decided that it is a condition that more people need to understand better as many doctors are unaware of just how the disease develops. This information will be of tremendous value to pregnant women as not addressing this will lead to a high birth weight baby which will often manifests as autism, ADD and ADHD. Children currently suffering from these disorders will benefit by following the recommended eating protocol.

The two supplements that I recommend in the video are Candex and Mega-Zyme. Use this link to get the best price online plus an extra $10 back on your first purchase.

I’ve been gradually adding more carbohydrate back to my diet. Sweet potatoes with the duck last night went down well, but I think that regular potato will take a while. I’ll give it another week before trying it again. It’s funny that at the beginning, eating this way seems like it’ll  be boring — a testament to how much sugar we actually consume in various forms. But as the days pass, the mind starts drawing on old recipes that you mom, grandma or even great grandma would’ve made. Tonight, we had corned beef and cabbage. I forgot how delicious it is, but now I need to go find another brisket to make it again!

Why Water Quality Matters

Why-Water-Quality-Matters.jpg

It is clear that drinking water is more beneficial to the body than drinking sodas, coffee, tea and juice, but so few people pay attention to the quality of the water they consume.

Tap water, for example, is filled with harmful contaminants such as chlorine, fluoride and all other sorts of industrial chemical runoff. These contaminants are responsible for a host of health problems, including, but not limited to, cancer, thyroid problems, autism (think heavy metal poisoning) and fertility problems.  This is one reason why it is so important to use a good quality water cooler dispenser for all of your drinking water, whether you are using it to drink straight or in other beverages and foods where the flavor might be masked such as in soups, coffee or tea (if you’re going to drink it, you might as well improve it), or making pasta or rice.

One of the most compelling reasons for drinking higher quality water is described in the work of Dr. Masaru Emoto of Japan who studied the crystalline structure of water under various conditions. What he found was that water from pristine origins such as clean bodies of water, waterfalls and sacred locations had a beautiful crystal structure reminding one of the most perfect diamond or a snowflake when viewed close up. On the other hand, contaminated water from city water supplies or other dirty industrial water supplies showed no discernible structure and in fact were ugly and distorted. While filtered water from a water cooler dispenser was not as perfect as some of the most pristine water sources in the world, it was very close.

In addition to the source and quality of the water, Emoto found that feelings directed toward water were very important to the integrity of the structure of water. By simply placing the positive words like “love” or “appreciation” on a glass of water, the water would also develop a beautiful crystalline structure under a microscope. While placing a label with words like “hate” or “kill” on water, the water would show the same distortion as the dirty water no matter what the origin of the water.

These observations are so important to humans, animals, the planet and our health in general. Water is such an important component of our bodies, making up more than 50%  of it. When you look at someone and see harsh signs of aging, sagging skin, strange eruptions and odd growths that don’t look quite normal, natural or organic, what do you think that is? I’m not talking about normal signs of aging, but really those oddities that make it virtually impossible to visualize what the person may have looked like in their youth. This is the manifestation of years of consuming toxic, damaged water, but it is also the manifestation of negative emotions like anger, hatred, and resentment that have literally distorted their physical bodies into something virtually unrecognizable as human. A bit like the story of “The Picture of Dorian Gray“.

The message here is not to take the quality of your water lightly. And if you do have the wisdom to consume high quality water, make sure that your emotions are in check and that you are able to maintain a level of peace and serenity in your life. Even something as simple as wearing clothing with positive messages on it can help you to send the right messages to the water in your cells. Indeed, the well being of your water can have a profound effect on your life and your health.
